The most famous meat goat breed originating from South Africa

The Boer goat is a premier South African meat goat breed developed in the early 1900s through selective breeding for superior meat production, fast growth rates, and high hardiness. The word "boer" comes from the Dutch and Afrikaans word for farmer.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Easily recognized by their distinctive white bodies and reddish-brown heads, long drooping ears, and a strong, muscular build.
  • Size: Adult bucks (males) weigh between 200 to 340 pounds (100–154 kg), while does (females) weigh 150 to 230 pounds (68–104 kg).
  • Temperament: Renowned for a docile, gentle, and calm disposition, making them relatively easy to handle and manage in a herd.
  • Adaptability: Highly resistant to common diseases and well-adapted to hot, arid, or brush-heavy environments.
  • Diet and Grazing: Natural browsers that prefer weeds, shrubs, and leaves over standard grass grazing, making them useful for pasture management and brush control.

Meat and Farming Production

  • Growth Rate: Kids feature a rapid daily weight gain and can reach market weight quickly.
  • Reproduction: Non-seasonal breeders that can reproduce year-round with high fertility rates, frequently producing twins or triplets.
  • Crossbreeding: Widely used worldwide in crossbreeding programs with local dairy or light-frame breeds to significantly improve meat yields and carcass conformation.
