Cacatua goffiniana
Parrots & cockatoos

The smallest species of white cockatoo

The Goffin's cockatoo (Cacatua goffiniana), also known as the Tanimbar corella, is the smallest species of white cockatoo, measuring roughly 12 inches (31 cm) in length and weighing between 250 to 300 grams. Endemic to the Tanimbar Islands in Indonesia, these affectionate, highly intelligent, and energetic birds are renowned for their extraordinary problem-solving capabilities, including tool manufacturing in captivity and the wild.

Physical Characteristics and Identification

  • Plumage: Predominantly white body feathers with delicate salmon-pink or pinkish-orange coloration near the lores (between the beak and eyes) and the base of crest and neck feathers.
  • Wings and Tail: The undersides of the flight and tail feathers feature a soft yellowish tinge.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Adult males typically feature a black iris, whereas adult females possess a brown iris.
  • Beak and Feet: Pale gray to bone-colored.

Natural Habitat and Conservation

  • Native Range: Restricted natively to the forests of Yamdena, Larat, and Selaru within the Tanimbar archipelago in Indonesia. Introduced populations exist in Singapore, Puerto Rico, and the Kai Islands.
  • Diet in the Wild: Omnivorous foragers feeding on seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, blossoms, and insect larvae. They can also act as local agricultural pests by raiding maize and grain crops.
  • Conservation Status: Listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List due to ongoing deforestation and illegal trapping for the cage-bird pet trade.

Intelligence and Tool Use

  • Cognitive Skills: Recognized alongside chimpanzees and a select few other species for carrying and utilizing toolsets. They can fashion tools out of wood, bamboo, or cardboard to extract seeds and solve mechanical puzzles.
  • Behavior: Highly inquisitive, playful, and legendary escape artists capable of manipulating cage latches.

Care as a Companion Parrot

  • Lifespan: Can live up to 30 to 40 years (and occasionally longer) in captivity.
  • Cost: Typically ranges from $1,000 to $3,000 USD for a young, weaned bird.
  • Temperament: Highly affectionate, cuddly, and social, but demanding of time (requiring a minimum of 3 to 4 hours of out-of-cage interaction daily). Neglect can easily lead to severe behavioral issues like screeching or feather plucking.
  • Diet: Best maintained on a foundation of high-quality formulated pellets (~75%) supplemented with fresh vegetables, leafy greens, and limited seeds/fruits (~25%) to prevent obesity.
