One of the oldest and heaviest domestic geese in the world

The Embden goose (also spelled Emden) is one of the oldest and heaviest domestic goose breeds in the world. Originating from the North Sea region of northwestern Germany near the town of Emden, these "gentle giants" are highly recognizable as the classic white farmyard goose. They are widely kept on homesteads and commercial farms for meat production, excellent foraging ability, and guard duties.

Breed Profile

Scientific Name: Anser anser

Origin: Germany (Emden region)

Adult Weight: Ganders (males): 20–31 lbs (9–14 kg)
: Geese (females): 13–24 lbs (6–11 kg)

Appearance: Pure white adult plumage, vibrant blue eyes, and bright orange bills and legs

Egg Production: 25–40 extra-large white eggs per year

Lifespan: 15–25 years

Key Characteristics & Uses

  • Commercial & Homestead Value: Because they grow rapidly and reach substantial final weights, Embdens are the primary breed used worldwide for commercial goose meat. Their pure white plumage is also highly valued because it simplifies plucking without leaving dark pinfeathers on the carcass.
  • Exceptional Foragers: They are dedicated herbivores and true grazers. Homesteaders frequently use them as natural weeders to clear pastures and orchards, which significantly minimizes commercial feed costs.
  • Temperament: They are generally calm, docile, and confident birds that bond closely with their keepers when raised with regular human interaction. They are also flightless due to their heavy body weight.
  • Natural Guardians: Despite their calm nature, their large size and loud, shrill warning calls make them highly effective property watchdogs. Ganders can become intensely territorial and protective when guarding a nesting female or goslings.
  • Weather Hardiness: Developed in cold coastal regions, they have tight, dense feathers that make them highly resilient against freezing sub-zero temperatures, though they require continuous access to clean open water.
