The common hill myna (Gracula religiosa) is a member of the starling family (Sturnidae) renowned globally for its extraordinary ability to mimic human speech and ambient sounds. Native to the foothill forests and tropical tree canopies of South and Southeast Asia, this glossy black bird is a popular subject in aviculture.
Physical Characteristics
- Plumage: Glossy black overall, displaying rich purple and green iridescence across the crown, neck, and breast, alongside striking white wing patches that become highly visible during flight.
- Bill and Legs: Equipped with a bright candlewax-orange to red bill that fades into a yellow hooked tip, complemented by bright yellow legs.
- Wattles: Marked by prominent, fleshy yellow or orange-yellow patches of bare skin and wattles extending from behind the eye down the sides of the nape.
- Size: Measures roughly 11 to 15 inches (27 to 30 cm) in total length.
Habitat and Distribution
- Native Range: Spans from the lower Himalayas and northeastern India across Southeast Asia—including southern China, Indochina, and the Thai-Malay Peninsula—down to parts of Indonesia and the Philippines.
- Environment: Highly arboreal, residing primarily in tall forest canopies, mature humid forests, and along wooded forest edges up to 2,000 meters above sea level.
- Social Habits: Typically moves in loud, active groups of half a dozen or more, often congregating in fruiting and flowering trees.
Diet and Foraging
- Omnivorous: Feeds extensively on a mixed diet of wild fruits, berries, nectar, and various insects.
- Ecological Role: Acts as an important seed disperser and pollinator when visiting flowering trees in the forest canopy.
