White Peafowl

White peafowl are not a separate species or true albinos, but rather a color mutation of the Indian Blue Peafowl caused by leucism, a genetic condition that prevents melanin and dark pigments from depositing in their feathers while keeping normal blue-grey eyes.

Understanding these magnificent birds involves looking closely at their biological traits, developmental stages, and presence in captivity compared to the wild.

Genetics and Appearance

  • Leucism vs. Albinism: Unlike true albinos—which have a complete lack of melanin resulting in pink or red eyes—leucistic peafowl produce normal eye pigmentation and can deposit color elsewhere, resulting in striking blue-grey eyes.
  • Plumage: Their feathers appear pure white, though faint, shadow-like eyespots (occelli) can sometimes be detected on the male's train under specific lighting.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Mature males (peacocks) develop long ornamental tail coverts and are larger in build than females (peahens), though young birds are difficult to sex visually during their first year.

Life Cycle and Maturation

  • Hatching Color: Peachicks are not born white; they emerge from their eggs with yellow down feathers and blue-seeing eyes.
  • Color Transition: Within days of hatching, they develop white wing tips, and as they mature past one to three years, the yellow down is entirely replaced by pure white adult plumage.
  • Breeding True: Pairing two white peafowls together yields 100% white offspring, whereas breeding a white peafowl with a standard Indian Blue can produce carrier birds ("split white") with white wing accents.

Captivity and Rarity

  • Wild vs. Captive: While they originate from the Indian subcontinent lineage, white peafowl are exceedingly rare in the wild because their bright white plumage makes them highly vulnerable to predators.
  • Popularity: They are widely and successfully managed in private collections, zoos, and specialized poultry farms, where live specimens typically command prices between $175 and $250 from breeders.
