Poodle Sizes

Poodles are bred in three primary sizes recognized by major kennel clubs like the American Kennel Club, with a medium size recognized internationally:

  • Standard Poodle: Stands over 15 inches (18–24 cm/in scale) and weighs 44–71 lbs (20–32 kg). Best suited for active families and large spaces.
  • Miniature Poodle: Stands 11–15 inches (28–38 cm) and weighs 10–15 lbs (4.5–7 kg). Great for moderate homes or active owners.
  • Toy Poodle: Stands under 10 inches (24–28 cm) and weighs 4–6 lbs (2–3 kg). Ideal for apartment living and close companionship.

Care and Maintenance

  • Grooming: Their low-shedding coats trap dander and loose hair, making them popular for allergy sufferers, but require daily brushing and professional clipping every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Exercise: They need physical activity and mental stimulation daily (ranging from 30 minutes for toys to over an hour for standard poodles) to avoid boredom and destructive behavior.
  • Health: Prone to ear infections due to hair growth inside ear canals, alongside breed-specific concerns like hip dysplasia in standards and patellar luxation in smaller varieties.
