A black bird with high intelligence and flexibility

A crow is a highly intelligent, adaptable black bird belonging to the genus Corvus within the family Corvidae.

Physical Characteristics and Identification

  • Plumage: Typically completely black, often with a glossy metallic sheen of blue, purple, or green under bright sunlight.
  • Size: Medium to large for songbirds, generally ranging from 15 to 20 inches (38 to 50 cm) in length, making them noticeably smaller and sleeker than their close relatives, the ravens.
  • Beak and Tail: Equipped with a strong, sturdy black bill used for omnivorous foraging and a rounded or fan-shaped tail (unlike the wedge-shaped tail of a raven).
  • Voice: Famous for their harsh, loud, and distinctive cawing or calling sounds.

Intelligence and Behavior

  • Advanced Problem Solving: Crows possess a brain-to-body mass ratio comparable to great apes and demonstrate cognitive abilities matching young human children. They can use and even manufacture tools, count, and understand analogies.
  • Social Recognition: They possess exceptional facial recognition, remember individual humans who pose a threat or offer kindness, and communicate those judgments to the rest of their flock.
  • The "Murder": A group of crows is collectively known as a murder, reflecting old folklore associations, and they frequently gather in large, complex communal roosts during fall and winter months.
  • Ecological Adaptability: Thriving alongside human expansion, crows exploit urban environments, agricultural fields, and open woodlands globally, feeding on an omnivorous diet of seeds, insects, fruits, and carrion.
