Sheep
Ovis ariesFour-legged animals have been kept by humans as livestock since ancient times.
Sheep (Ovis aries) are domesticated, even-toed ruminant mammals traditionally raised as livestock for their fleece, meat, and milk. As one of the earliest animals ever domesticated by humans—dating back roughly 11,000 years in the Middle East—there are now over 1.2 billion domestic sheep distributed across the globe.
Basic Terminology & Biological Profile
The naming conventions for sheep vary distinctly based on their age, sex, and reproductive status:
- Ewe: An adult female sheep.
- Ram: An intact adult male sheep (sometimes called a tup).
- Wether: A castrated male sheep.
- Lamb: A young sheep under one year of age.
Sheep possess a complex four-compartment stomach that enables them to digest tough grasses and plant matter via regurgitation and cud-chewing. While wild sheep species primarily grow coarse hair with a short wool undercoat, centuries of selective human breeding have led to domestic variants that produce thick, continuously growing fleeces harvested via annual shearing.
Surprising Cognitive and Social Traits
Despite the common cultural stereotype of sheep as timid or simple-minded animals, scientific research indicates they possess complex cognitive and emotional lives:
- Facial Recognition: Sheep can recognize and remember at least 50 unique sheep faces and 10 human faces for up to two years. They also perceive emotional changes and structurally prefer a smiling face over a scowling one.
- Panoramic Vision: Their large, rectangular pupils grant them an expansive peripheral vision of nearly 360 degrees, allowing them to scan for predators behind themselves without turning their heads.
- Advanced Social Structure: Sheep are highly gregarious herd animals that experience severe stress and depression-like symptoms when isolated. They form lasting friendships within their flocks and will actively defend one another during conflicts.
Agricultural Products
- Wool: The most widely utilized animal fiber in the world, valued for its insulation, durability, and texture. Highly sought-after fine wool comes from specialized breeds like Merino sheep.
- Meat: Classified explicitly by the age of the animal. Culinary meat sourced from younger sheep is labeled lamb, while meat from mature adults is called mutton.
- Dairy: Sheep milk is rich in solids, making it the primary choice for producing renowned specialty cheeses such as Roquefort, Pecorino Romano, and Feta.
